The dialect of Korean spoken in North Korea varies from that of South Korea mostly through contemporary additions and official terminology changes since separation in the 1950s. For example, in the North they prefer to called the writing system Chosoengeul (์กฐ์ ๊ธ), claiming cultural ownership, as opposed to Hanguel (ํ๊ธ), which means "great script", but likewise can be interpreted as claiming Southern ownership.
