Benelux refers to the union of the the neighboring European countries Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. While today the term is used mostly to refer to the economic and cultural ties between the three countries, historically the Benelux Union dates back to customs agreements made between the three countries in 1944 establishing a common economy.
It many ways the governmental structures established by Benelux can be seen as the first step towards the formation of the European Union (EU). However in spite of obsoleteness from EU success, Benelux remains an active governing entity.
The official languages of the Benelux Union in which all governmental documents must be published are: Dutch, English, French, Frisian, German, Luxembourgish, Papiamento.
